Yay, I'm so glad you made a thread for this.

I've started Nano almost every single year for the past seven years and never finished it once. It's at such an awkward time of the year that I was always busy with college/school work. I'm still in college now but I feel like if I don't write something soon, I'm going to really regret it years down the line when I have a stressful job and no free time to take on something like this.

This year I have the entire plot for a sci-fi/dystopian novel planned out and I just need to write it. The only thing is that I've seen a few pieces of media recently that were similar to the plot I have and I'm worried that they're TOO similar. It's kind of put me off writing it now. On the other hand, it's possible that people who liked the themes from them are looking for similar novels to read and might enjoy my story for that reason?

I'm not really sure what to do now.

You should write the story/plot you are enthusiastic about! The thing is, I think, unless you are disciplined you need to write about something you like to make it through every day. So if you don't feel good about your current story, maybe think of something new, or give it a few adjustments? But just because there's similar media shouldn't stop you if that's what you want to write.

(Though I have seen people wrote 50k in the first days, and ugh, jealous.)

I honestly don't think I'll be able to come up with something as detailed as that before November so I'm probably going to stick with this story. Even if I don't do anything with it, at least it will be good practise to write daily and prove to myself that I can write a draft in that short amount of time!
