Old shoujo manga are generally good. They're still being made but I've heard that they literally reject the good shit in shoujo magazines these days because of sexism ("girls only read manga about love and fashion", that kinda shit) so the female authors that want to publish their cool female protagonist stories have to do so in shounen, seinen or general magazines, and don't get the shoujo label, so they're not very obvious at first. I believe The Ancient Magus's Bride is one such example.
