A lot of Shadow's lyrics had to do with how conflicted he feels. Even in his theme, "Throw It All Away", it comments on how, even if he is immortal, it doesn't matter and he would rather throw it all away because the life itself is meaningless.

In Rhythm and Balance, the White Jungle stage where you have to save Rouge before the island explodes, the song asks over and over if Shadow is scared, once again that if he fails, he will lose yet another person close to him.

In the Supernatural, Final Chase's stage, the song starts asking if Shadow is even the Ultimate Lifeform to begin with as he gets closer to Maria's "dream."

The Biolizard of course, is unironically what I'd call Shadow's swan song. "Supporting Me" sounds just like the title, Shadow has finally given up revenge and learned that he wants to protect the world but he doesn't really know how to do this. He will do everything in his power, knowing that Maria is supporting him in order to fulfill her last wish, even if it means his untimely end, which the song references at the end of the song as well.

And of course, Live and Learn. Pretty explanatory, but it's learning to live with your mistakes and to keep moving in life even if all seems lost.

Shadow's story was unironically a great lead up from a broken individual lead on by hatred to one of redemption, giving his life to the ones he tried to destroy in the first place. We really won't have kino like this again, but at least its here.

Shadow is such a sad character. He doesn't understand positive emotions such as love or simple joys in life, just like a robot. But unlike a robot, Shadow does feel those emotions. He just can't process or express them because he is literally a lab experiment. Shadow has too much kindness, empathy, integrity and self accountability to dehumanize others. Regardless of gender.

Shadow puts doing the right thing over his arrogance, he doesn't take cheap shots, and he's fairly sociable.

Shadow had people who loved him before he was even born.

The movie gives Maria a fondness of rollerblading to tie into Shadow's air shoes.

Shadow started the movie with the view that the pain and anger he felt at Maria's death justified whatever he did to get justice for her. But you can kind of tell he's looking for something to shake him out of that view. He pretty much knows that this isn't what Maria would want him to do and he clearly feels guilty for hurting Tom, but he just doesn't have it in him to let go of his anger, plus Gerald is actively stoking it.

When Sonic attacks him in revenge for Tom, it confirms Shadow's worldview and he tells Sonic as much. Then instead of finishing him off, Sonic shows him mercy and tries to relate his own loss to Shadow, giving Shadow the push he needed to do what he probably wanted to do the entire time.

Eggman and Shadow got dragged into what is essentially a mass suicide pact. Eggman had no idea what Gerald’s plot was and by the time he realized he was already trapped in the ARK with no way back to Earth.

They come at it from different angles but both the movie and the game posit that Shadow is inherently a pure-hearted guy that wants to do the right thing and Maria is the person who sees that more than anybody else and brings it out of him. I think it's a really interesting difference that in the game, Maria directly asks Shadow to protect Earth, but in the movie, Maria just tells him to choose who he wants to be and Shadow chooses to protect Earth on his own.

It felt like people who truly love SA2 and Shadow and were able to bring out everything that made it good. The only thing it was missing was some SA2 lines
