Hetalia fangirls were the OG femcels (2008-2012), writing fanfics about men who wouldn’t touch them Anonymous 36216

JFL if Ludwig (picrel) would ever touch your PSL 3, overweight, acne-ridden ass from Ohio.

If you were online during the Hetalia craze of 2008–2012, you witnessed the rise of what can only be described as OG femcels. These fangirls were pining after fictional, high-SMV anime men like Ludwig (tall, blonde, disciplined gigachad) while sitting in their childhood bedrooms, greasy hair tied back, typing out Ludwig x Reader smut fics on Tumblr.

As someone who was also really into Hetalia (now in my mid twenties and still unfortunately femcel-adjacent), it was absolutely HELLISH in the fandom but damn was it a fun time.

Fandom in general was really fun around that time. Now every time I see Hetalia I can’t help but to feel as if I was in an alternate reality during that point in my life. It’s just so odd to remember this anime ever existed.

Why are femcels so drawn to Hetalia, and if you had to choose who to fuck and have as a boyfriend would you choose Arthur or Ludwig?

I think to understand why femcels were so into Hetalia is to know why girls (and women) are drawn to the Boy’s Love genre in the first place.

The simple answer is: In BL media, the focus is on male characters (and homosexuality).

In these stories, female characters are not “coveted”— and in some weird sense, this eliminates “competition” between the fujos and the anime women.

And that probably sounds absolutely hilarious that actual females become envious of anime but it is an actual thing and I have experienced this, lmao.

In media outside of BL, the main woman becomes the beauty icon and we cannot be whatever she is. This is the reason for why, particularly in shounen anime which tends to be popular all across the board, the main chick receives so much hate. For example, the Naruto x Sakura x Sasuke debate of a similar time.

Hetalia was effective because it featured a big cast that was entirely male. When the female characters were shown, it was no more than a minute. And the homosexual undertones was a bonus.

When there are no female character to compare yourself with (and tons of men with an ambiguous sexuality, in this case), it’s a lot easier to believe that you have a chance with any of them :’).

It was also very internet-esque. Since the episodes were five minutes each and sectioned into a thirty minute block. So it had the short but quirky YT video format that MMD videos had— which featured a lot of Hetalia content, too.

This was more than I expected to type but it still doesn’t seem like I’ve explained it too well.

Anyway, I choose England. Maybe it’s me but he seems to fuck like a mad man (and has enough manners to fool me into thinking he’s a great guy, too).

I forgot to mention that Hetalia isn’t a BL
anime but it comes close enough.

The appeal of liking fictional men is that you don't have to worry about if they'd like you back
Ludwig can do whatever you want him to

Anonymous 36240

why are you people so obsessed with "femcels". were twilight fangirls also "femcels"

I remember I liked the autistic Italian one. Probably sparked my preference for emasculated men.

They were both autistic , tbh.

But I’m guessing you mean the younger one? The older one used to do it for me— probably still would if I were to ever get back into Hetalia (not happening).

JFL post this on looksmax.org or fds

I don't believe Hetalia is especially femcelly, it was just highly marketable because the theme was instantly recognizable and likeable and it wasn't so overtly gay as to drive the casuals away. The cast was huge so there was someone for everyone and any character you disliked you could easily ignore. It was simply popular with a lot of girls, some of whom became femcels later on.

>writing fanfics about men who wouldn’t touch them

I always thought Character x Reader was cringe as hell and the characters I was obsessed with it were not particularly "high-SMV", rather I liked them because they were endearing or the relationship dynamics were relatable.
