People's sense of self tends to depend on the narratives they construct around who they think they are and what they think they value, so getting into arguments with strangers online is some weird way of saying 'this is who I am and this is why I'm different from and better than you'. I think we tend to feel more comfortable preoccupied with our own thoughts than paying attention to things outside of them. I'm not sure why we feel more comfortable doing this though.
