A lot of it is extremely cringy, but you have to find authors you genuinely like. Also, it takes a bit of suspending disbelief. You kinda also have to be horny before you read it, not read it in order to get horny. Otherwise, it's extremely cringe, kinda how you feel embarrassed after realizing what you just jilled to. Admittedly, I don't read fics as much as I used to (mostly because I can't find suitable topics to read about), but if you just act selfish for a little while, it's actually okay-ish. It's probably more important to find specific fetishes or situations you like, than focusing on a certain character.
