Cats absolutely know how we are feeling. I was suicidally depressed and crying last night and my kitty was headbutting and rubbing on me, just trying his best to get me to pet him because he knows that makes me feel better.

Today I was feeling really down and my cat brought me his favourite toy and we had a cuddle and then he insisted that we play (his toy is a thing on a string). I am 100% sure that they know. I love my cats so much, and I hope they know that I love them.
Tbh I am pretty sure all mammals who ever live in groups (litters, herds, etc) will know to some extent how you're feeling. We all have similar hormones and our brains aren't so different that we would experience eg anger or joy too differently.
