So, autism, at least in girls, is way over diagnosed. This is, in part, because of a broadening of the scope of what autism entails due to a gross oversimplification that does not hold up under developmental models and fMRIs between the various mental disorders.
The real reason behind this is a bit more sinister: it's a systemic cover up of gross abuse in female adolecence (sorry, I can't spell).
If you look at any listing on the symptoms of girls with autism and signs of children who may be experience abuse at the hands of their parents and caretakers, it isn't a mild overlap: it's a 1:1 overlap. PTSD, Autism, Borderline Personality Disorder, and ADHD have major symptomatic overlaps and presentations, but the internal world, causes, and treatments could not be more different. A lot of it stems from emotional neglect and the intense amounts of sexual abuse girls receive at the hands of others. Seriously, go look. Neglect can lead to language developmental difficulties, but it lacks the early onset presentation difficulties that autism comes with.
They label girls with ASD simply because most people do not want to address the elephant in the room.
How many "autistic" girls lack the rigid thinking, language developmental disorders, and emotional deficits that come with ASD? Most.
A few other disorders get mistaken for ASD. Hard of hearing disorders, ADHD, Borderline PD.
>>334281 is half right. Us psychos and autists look
very similar from the outside. Most psychiatrists and psychologists will absolutely refuse to diagnose children and teens with an Cluster B personality disorder, even though it becomes VERY apparent what we are around that age. And so, they will usually officially diagnose us with one of two diagnoses: Autism/Aspergers, or ADHD. On my official transcript from the time, I was listed as having ADHD. It changed to BPD later without my knowledge; I stopped being so much of a psycho once I was taken off the ADHD meds too.
So, the increase in ASD diagnoses comes from two directions.
1: Ignoring major abuses to girls via neglect and straight up abuse.
2: Refusing to diagnose "children" with an antisocial disorder.
They choose ASD these days as it's the trendy disorder that is receiving a lot of sympathy, research, and is an acceptable diagnosis that is impossible to treat, like Cluster B disorders.
